When it comes to old snowmobile ads, sometimes you can find good ones not in the big, mainstream consumer publications that you’ve probably all heard of, but rather in the magazines that were made specifically to talk to dealers, manufacturers and aftermarket officials.
Back in the day, there was a magazine called Snow Goer Trade that was sent only to people on the business side of the snowmobile market. Of course, there have always been so-called trade or “industry” magazines and outlets. But in the early 1970s, when there were over 100 snowmobile brands trying to attract professional dealers to carry their product, the trade magazines were flush with manufacturer ads.
Convincing dealers to carry your product was often as important to creating your niche as was telling consumers why you’re different or better. So it was in Snow Goer Trade that we found this ad for the Quebec-based Northway brand. It’s got a simple message, and like most dealer ads you won’t find a lot of spec information on the sleds. Instead, the primary promise is profits.
