For 35 years, Snow Goer has asked a deceptively difficult question: Which snowmobile best represents where the industry is going?
Snowmobile of the Year award is reserved for the machine that does more than simply perform well. It has to represent something meaningful about the future of snowmobiling. That could mean an entirely new chassis, a breakthrough suspension, a significant change in engine technology or a combination of innovations that changes what riders can expect from a production snowmobile.
This year, we’ve chosen the Ski-Doo MXZ X-RS 600RR.
The choice isn’t based simply on the fact that the MXZ X-RS is an exceptionally capable trail sled. We’ve ridden plenty of excellent snowmobiles over the years, and there are several impressive machines in the 2027 lineup. What sets this one apart is what’s happening beneath its hood, and what that technology could mean for snowmobiling in the years ahead.
The heart of the MXZ X-RS 600RR is the new Rotax 600RR E-TEC, a 599cc liquid-cooled, two-cylinder 2-stroke that produces approximately 130 horsepower. That’s only about 5 more horsepower than the 600 E-TEC it replaces, but focusing on the horsepower number misses the significance of this engine. Rotax went considerably deeper than simply turning up the wick.
The 600RR uses additional booster injectors, revised cylinder porting, a new throttle-body design and a higher maximum engine speed of 8,250 rpm. The result is a claimed 20% improvement in throttle response, along with stronger acceleration and a more aggressive power delivery. The engine also gets a revised intake and exhaust system that gives it a distinctive sound while helping it breathe more freely.
The 600RR introduces Smart ECO mode, which gives riders a way to prioritize efficiency when maximum performance isn’t necessary. Ski-Doo says the mode can reduce fuel consumption by approximately 5%. More significantly, the engine is designed to use about 20% less oil than its predecessor.
Then there is Silent-Stop. When the rider comes to a complete stop with the brake applied, the engine can shut itself off automatically and restart when the brake is released. It’s a concept familiar to drivers of modern automobiles, but Ski-Doo says this is the first application of the technology on a snowmobile.
It is easy to dismiss something like Silent-Stop as a novelty. But that’s precisely why we think it matters. The most meaningful technological advancements aren’t always the ones that make a snowmobile faster. Sometimes they make it smarter, more efficient or better suited to the way people actually use it.
The 600RR is also significant because of where Ski-Doo is putting it. This isn’t a limited-production race engine that exists only in one exotic model. The new powerplant is being offered across a surprisingly broad portion of the 2027 lineup, including trail, crossover and utility applications. That gives riders with very different priorities access to the same fundamental engine technology.
That brings us to accessibility. At $15,599, the MXZ X-RS isn’t an entry-level snowmobile, nor would we suggest that a $15,000-plus sled is accessible to every rider. But the 600RR itself isn’t restricted to the most expensive or specialized machines. The technology is being spread throughout the lineup, and the MXZ platform remains one of Ski-Doo’s core trail families.
The X-RS is also an appropriate place for this engine to make its debut. The MXZ X-RS combines the 600RR with Ski-Doo’s REV Gen5 platform, RAS RX front suspension and rMotion X rear suspension. The result is a package built around the kind of aggressive trail riding that allows the engine’s quick response and strong midrange to shine. The 137-inch version weighs 488lb according to Ski-Doo’s specifications, giving the 600RR a relatively light platform in which to deliver its performance.
The MXZ X-RS 600RR stands apart because it represents a meaningful step forward without abandoning what has made the 600-class so appealing in the first place. It delivers more power and quicker response while using less oil, adding an efficiency mode, and introducing automatic engine stop/start technology—all in a compact two-stroke package that can serve a wide range of riders and applications.
Just as important, the MXZ X-RS demonstrates the level of refinement we have come to expect from Ski-Doo. The fit and finish, attention to detail and integration of technology throughout the sled are consistently impressive. Nothing feels like an afterthought. From the engine to the chassis to the rider interface, the 600RR is a cohesive, polished package.
That’s ultimately what won us over. The Snowmobile of the Year isn’t necessarily the sled we’d recommend to every rider, nor is it simply the fastest or most expensive machine. It’s the snowmobile that makes us stop and think about where the sport is headed, and who is taking us there.
That’s why the Ski-Doo MXZ X-RS 600RR is our Snowmobile of the Year.
