Ski‑Doo Ushers in a New Era with Rotax 600RR E‑TEC Power

Last fall, Snow Goer had the chance to tour the Rotax factory in Austria. During the visit we wondered if something new was on the horizon for 2027, since BRP and Rotax are always on the cutting edge of technology.

To our delight, the new engine was announced this spring, and we even had the chance to ride it at the Snow Shoot event in February. A more detailed review is coming soon to Snow Goer magazine. Stay tuned for that!

In the meantime, here is an overview of the new Rotax 600RR E‑TEC engine.

For the 2027 model year, Ski‑Doo is pushing its 2‑stroke performance envelope with the new Rotax 600RR E‑TEC engine. It’s a fresh take on the brand’s 600cc class that blends higher output with refined efficiency and rideability. The 600RR joins Ski‑Doo’s lineup as a next‑generation powerplant designed to deliver spirited performance across a variety of sled types.

Built around a familiar 600cc liquid‑cooled, twin‑cylinder platform, the 600RR E‑TEC uses E‑TEC direct injection with additional booster injectors to optimize combustion and throttle response.

What’s New Under the Hood

While it shares its displacement with past Ski‑Doo 600 engines, the Rotax 600RR E‑TEC distinguishes itself through enhanced delivery and responsiveness. Thanks to an updated fuel‑injection strategy and eRAVE valve timing, riders can expect crisper throttle response (20% improvement) and stronger midrange performance which translates into more confident acceleration. These improvements mean the engine uses less fuel and less oil (20% less), plus it runs in a higher RPM range delivering a considerable power boost.

Overall, this engine puts out approximately 130 horsepower, compared to the previous engine’s 125 ponies. Ski‑Doo has also equipped the engine with smart ECO mode and a Silent‑Stop function, giving riders choices between maximum performance and efficiency‑focused operation.

How It Works

At its core, the 600RR E‑TEC uses direct fuel injection, with a primary injector for normal operation and a booster injector for high RPM, delivering precise fuel, crisp throttle response, efficient combustion, and lower emissions. An ECM continuously monitors throttle, engine speed, load, and temperature to adjust fuel and ignition.

The eRAVE electronic exhaust valve optimizes port timing for strong low-end torque and high-end horsepower. An electronic oil-injection system meters lubrication automatically, reducing smoke and eliminating the need for pre-mix fuel. High-precision components like forged pistons, coated cylinder walls, and low-friction parts allow the engine to run aggressively while offering up to 600-hour rebuild intervals.

ECO mode targets better fuel economy and reduced emissions by optimizing the air-fuel mixture and injection timing. This is the first time we’ve seen an economy mode on a 2-stroke sled, and it equates to about 5% less fuel consumption when set to ECO. Yes, you will sacrifice a little performance when using the ECO mode, but it can be turned off when you don’t want to make use of better fuel consumption or softer throttle response.

Silent‑Stop is essentially an auto engine shutoff and restart system. This is a similar technology to what we’ve seen in the automotive world for several years, but it’s the first time it’s been used on a snowmobile. It works by shutting the engine off when you come to a complete stop with the brake lever engaged. When you release the brake, the engine restarts automatically. This technology is a small but welcome detail for riders conscious of winter riding etiquette at trailheads and staging areas. Not to mention, it helps to conserve fuel when not moving.

A Broad Application Across Models

The 600RR E‑TEC’s versatility means it appears on a wide range of 2027 Ski‑Doo models. Traditional trail performance sleds like the MXZ X‑RS come equipped with the new mill, pairing this lively engine with race‑inspired chassis tuning and high‑end suspension to deliver nimble handling and explosive acceleration.

Utility‑oriented models such as the Skandic LE also list the 600RR E‑TEC among their powertrain options, giving riders a strong blend of everyday usability, towing capability, and spirited performance.

Even crossover and backcountry‑focused sleds benefit. Versions of the Backcountry Adrenaline and other REV Gen5 platform machines leverage the new engine’s balanced power delivery to tackle trail systems, open bowls, and variable snow conditions.

What This Means for Riders

For Ski‑Doo enthusiasts, the arrival of the 600RR E‑TEC signals a meaningful update to the brand’s engine offerings. With more horsepower and refined throttle control, the new powerplant helps bridge the gap between traditional 600‑class sleds and larger, more expensive engines.

Its integration into models across the lineup also reflects Ski‑Doo’s broader strategy for 2027, blending advanced technology with versatile platforms to appeal to trail riders, utility users, and adventure seekers. If you’ve been waiting for a 600‑class engine that feels lively without sacrificing everyday usability, this new Rotax deserves a close look when it hits dealer floors this season.

  • The market wants a 650-700 cc two stroke, not stop start which every one hates on vehicles. Wears out starters and alternators and batteries like crazy. since they never beef those up for the increased usage, just more parts to replace much earlier than normal, more expense for the rider but more profits for the manufacturer.

If Ski-Doo brought back the old reliable 670 and 700 of past it (re the MXZ and Mach 1) and or better yet the Formula 700 triple single pipe would have been a sales success leader.

Model year 2028 will be Arctic Cat’s 25th anniversary of the FireCat F7 with 140 hp, if they really are committed to Riders Rule they will come out with a 160 hp 700 the replace the 600 and be the marker leader. Arctic Cat may also bring back the triples that everyone loves, wants and will buy as they last forever, sound great and are super smooth as triples are uniquely balance motors.

Bring back motors that last long are super reliable, durable and performance winners that sound so sweet.

Everyone built great triples (Polaris, Arctic Cat, Ski-Doo and Yamaha) that were total success market leaders desired by all and strong durable reliable motors to benefit the riders.

  • 600RR. RR used to stand for Race Ready or Race Replica not Refined Rideability.

Saving gas mileage is always good but saving oil not in a two stroke as we desperately need it to cool down the motor and make sure it is properly lubed as all the federal emissions requirements requiring less and less oil for pollution control has made new motors much less reliable, durable and rugged, i.e. costly repairs and more frequent repairs / rebuilds.
