The Incredible Journey Of Dick Decker, Who’s Turning 90

Ninety years ago today, Richard “Dick” Decker entered the world. It would take another 45 years after that before he and his family discovered the sport of snowmobiling. After that, they were all hooked – from owning a dealership to being a part of an early adventure team, Hall of Fame racing efforts to ownership of the Eagle River Derby Track, to operating a high-profile touring company that introduced thousands of people to the sport, he and his family did it all. And with that list, we’re just barely scratching the surface of their many touchpoints in ther sport.

We called Dick this morning to wish him a happy birthday. “Wow, 90 laps around the sun – congratulations,” we offered.

“Oh, I think it’s probably been a few too many laps,” he joked back. When we reached him he was just getting ready to board a pontoon for a late summer ride on the chain of lakes in Eagle River, Wisconsion. “We don’t have much time left for boating season,” he said, “but we’ll have to plan a snowmobile ride together this winter.” Indeed we will.

He also shared his plans to enter one more snowmobile race this coming winter!

To celebrate Decker’s birthday, we’re offering access to our digital edition of the November 2019 issue of Snow Goer magazine, which features an extensive story we did on Mr. Decker, where he shared details on his family’s amazing 55-plus year journey through the sport of snowmobiling.
