Snowmobiler Rescued from Lake Huron Ice During Blizzard
A snowmobiler is safe after a dramatic rescue on Lake Huron near Mackinac Island, Michigan, where blizzard conditions turned a ride into a life-threatening situation.
According to officials, the 55-year-old rider ventured onto the frozen lake despite prior warnings about unsafe and rapidly changing ice conditions. While traveling roughly a mile off the west shore of Mackinac Island, he became disoriented in near whiteout conditions and was unable to find his way back.

Local first responders initially attempted to reach him, guiding the rider via GPS. However, worsening weather and the presence of open water forced a change in plans. With aerial rescue ruled out due to the storm, the U.S. Coast Guard deployed the icebreaker cutter Mackinaw to assist.
The cutter navigated through heavy ice to the rider’s location and deployed an ice rescue team, successfully recovering both the snowmobiler and his machine. He was brought aboard, treated for mild hypothermia, and later reported to be in stable condition.
Officials emphasized that Great Lakes ice conditions can change rapidly and are never guaranteed safe. The incident serves as a stark reminder that even experienced riders face serious risks when venturing onto large bodies of frozen water—especially during severe winter weather.
Stay safe out there, everyone.

This individual should never have tried this. Placed first responders at risk in terrible conditions. Fortunately he lived. Please think when going out on the ice.
