VIDEO: Snow Goer Live With Watercross Legends, Competitors
Further proof that some folks think about snowmobiles year-round can be seen in the fascinating sport of watercross. And the sport’s World Championship is held every year in July in Grantsburg, Wisconsin.
Watercross is wild, wacky, fun and highly entertaining. And it’s also highly competitive. It involves racers defying science by racing products that would naturally sink for multiple laps across an ever-changing water surface. And a watercross event is one of the very few in the sport of snowmobiling where spectators bring their own chairs and catch some rays while enjoying the action!
To prep for the 48th annual World Championship Snowmobile Watercross at Grantsburg (July 18-20, 2025), he hosted a special episode of Snow Goer Live. First, we chatted with the only 12-time Watercross World Champ, Snowmobile Hall of Famer Mark Maki, about the origins of the sport. Learn how what started out as a “water skip” competition (where merely staying afloat the longest would earn a championship) evolved into multi-lap, multi-venue events.
Next, we were joined by defending and 6-time watercross champ David Fischer, plus one of his main rivals, James Marietta. Together, they painted a picture of the festive scene at Grantsburg.
