Join A Club, And Become A Hidden Hero

To many sledheads, snowmobile clubs and the incredible work they do are similar to the relationship that children have with the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus: We see the evidence of the good deeds and frankly sometimes really take them for granted, but rarely do we see them performing their miraculous tasks!

  Unlike those mystical characters, however, snowmobile club members don’t have somebody else doing the work behind the scenes – and we’re not talking about elves here! It’s regular folks like you and me who are responsible for virtually everything that goes into creating and maintaining the infrastructure for our sport.

  This season, consider your role in that trail infrastructure beyond just riding on it – whether you join/support a club for the first time, or actually get your hands dirty with some of the work. Oftentimes, that work quickly becomes an interesting labor of love.

Evidence Is Everywhere

Within a mile of riding virtually any snowmobile trail, evidence of the clubs/club members and their importance is everywhere.

It starts with the actual path the trail follows. If the trail crosses private property, for instance, there’s a good chance that it was club members who originally got permission to utilize the trail corridor from the landowners, quite likely many years ago. But that permission often must be renewed every single year – and, again, the club members are the folks that make it happen.

Once the path is established, though, the job has just begun. In most instances, the trail base must be maintained. Depending on the exact circumstances, the surface may need to be flattened, graded or mowed; it may need bridges built over creeks or low spots. If it passes through forest land, it likely needs “brushing,” where club members trim back the tree limbs and other obstructions. When late summer turns to fall, it’s time for signage duty: Those stop signs, orange assurance diamond markers, directional arrows and more don’t just appear with a dash of ferry dust. Most are pounded into the ground and regularly maintained by club members.  

All of the above, of course, occurs before the snow flies. Once the white gold starts tumbling from the heavens, snowmobile clubs are responsible for the maintenance of most trails. Aside from the actual time spent pulling a large drag through the woods and across fields to create the wonderfully smooth ribbon on which we ride, that grooming equipment must be funded, acquired and maintained. There’s a lot involved that may not immediately meet the eye.

Everything mentioned so far are just some of the efforts expended when everything goes right! Snowmobile club members are also often involved in re-routing trails, dealing with conflicts, fixing problems and – often through the state/provincial/national organizations they belong to – protecting and defending your right to ride.

More Than Simply Doing Your Part        

Snowmobile clubs want you to become active members for more reasons than just the work, however. Club membership is a lot of fun. You can hang out with like-minded people, expand your circle of riding buddies, go on club trips, participate in events, and much more.
