101 Great Trailside Pitstops: Read, Then Nominate

Lava Mountain Lodge in Wyoming

Before COVID stalled out some of our ability to visit trailside pitstops last winter, the often humble, mom-and-pop restaurants and bars that are found along the snowmobile trail system have been a vital part of snowmobiling culture. They are a great place to eat some delicious home made food while you warm up and trade stories with fellow riders.

Below, you will find the 101 Great Snowmobile Pitstops story as it appeared in the February 2020 issue of Snow Goer magazine. Breeze through it and see how many of these great places you’ve been to. THEN — and this is the important part — give us your nomination/suggestion for this winter’s list of Great Pitstops. Tell us the name and location of one of your favorites and a brief reason why it stands out, just like the nominations you see below — either by emailing us at jprusak@snowgoer.com or by merely filling out the “Comments” box on the bottom of this story.

Feel free to re-nominate any of the places mentioned below, but we’re also always looking for new destinations. No more than three nominations per person, please. Thanks.

101 Great Snowmobile Pitstop

Even the heartiest of trail riders need to stop sometime

Whether it’s for a bite to eat or fuel in the tank, a great pitstop can provide the break you need to turn your trip from good to great. Often found off-the-beaten-path, these establishments are the real gem of the snowmobiling community.

Every year Snow Goer compiles the 101 Best Pitstops after soliciting nominations from those who know best – you! Cross-reference this list with where you’re headed, and set a goal to see how many you can visit.

I would like to nominate The Washburn Club House of the Washburn Snowmobile Club in Washburn Maine… For a 101 Top Trailside Pitstop… Located in Aroostook County Maine… An untraditional nomination… probably! BUT one worth mentioning…

The Washburn Snowmobile Club boasts a strong team of club members that serve up fantastic breakfasts and lunches on weekends, some weekdays and extra days around holidays and even weeks during school holidays… and they also provide an AWESOME CLUB HOUSE FACILITY… for membership you gain 24/7 access with a key card to the club house… for shelter from severe weather… to a stop to warm up and rest…limited kitchen facilities and restrooms available.

For us to travel and make this one of our stops…midweek… Our group of 14 riders pack up snacks, beverages and packable light lunch foods to share with each other… We linger, enjoy each other’s company in a clean, cozy good sized clubhouse… We have conversation with other members that stop in and swap snowmobile trail conditions and SLEDVENTURES!

One of our favorite “Look forward to” stops…

GREAT STOP… GREAT CLUB HOUSE AND EVEN GREATER CLUB MEMBERS!!!

Pine Stump Bar and Grill, Pine Stump Junction Michigan.
Friendly staff, in the middle of the snow belt with a lot of lake effect snow, fantastic food and cold beverages for after the days riding. Cabins on site. The owner even built an area for outside dining with heat and partially out of the weather last season during the Covid shut downs. The pizza is the best.

The Little Fox in Big Moose (Old Forge) New York.

With a newly renovated kitchen, the owner Beth is making some world class food. One great example is on Saturdays, one of the entries is an authentic Raman Noodle Bowl as good, or better, as I have had in any big city fine dining. Fresh ingredients and a skilled chef makes the Little Fox a gem along the trail

Always a destination to stop for great food with the family. Plenty of selections on the menu for everyone, but their pizza is always ordered by someone in our group to share. They also have a heated outdoor shelter, gas, and cabin rentals.

The Little Fox in Big Moose has been on the Adirondack Snowmobile trail years before there was a trail! This place was the original Place to get warm and get a great meal on the Adirondack Snowmobile trail. Beth’s father Bill was an early pioneer and blazed many of the Trails from Utica to Big Moose. This Restaurant and Bar is a destination when Sledding across New York’s Central Adirondack region.
