It’s official: The season opening snowmobile snocross race scheduled for November 23-25 in Duluth, Minnesota, is “on,” despite the warmer-than-normal weather being experienced by much of the country, according to ISOC officials this morning. That means the high-flying, fast-moving, paint-trading action that is the Amsoil Duluth National at Spirit Mountain will again be a Thanksgiving Weekend festivity for more than 20,000 fans in the Upper Midwest.
The Duluth National is something special. Now in its 20th year, it features a tight, bumpy course in front of the chalet at the ski hill, with great sight lines either outside on the bleachers or inside if you can get close to the windows. Getting close to those windows isn’t always easy, however, as this big daddy event always kicks off the season with a huge, adoring crowd.
As usual, the Duluth National will feature racing in a variety of classes, from 120 youth sleds and the 8-12 transitional class all the way up to the top pros in the world – yes, the world. This year’s Pro Open class will again feature the very best racers from across the U.S. and Canadian Snowbelt regions as well as four from Scandinavia.
With three full days of racing, the snow that’s been shot out of the ski hill’s 17 snow guns will be run over often. Each day will include a major Pro Open event. Friday, it’s the second year of the Amsoil Dominator – a series of one-on-one showdowns among the top pro racers in a non-points event that’s all about the money (that’s $10,000 in money, by the way!).
Saturday things really get rolling at the track with a full day of racing that is scheduled to start with practices at 8:30 a.m. and conclude with the Pro Open final at 7:45 p.m. This is the very first points race of the season, so a lot will be on the line.
Sunday is a shorter, all-star program, with the Pro Open, Pro Lite, Pro-Am Women and Champ 120 racers. The can’t-miss Pro Open final is scheduled for 2:45 p.m.
