We knew it was only a matter of time before one of the manufacturers brought to market a direct-injected, two-stroke sled. We also placed our bets on BRP being the first. With its MX Z TNT 600 H.O. E-TEC, we’re pleased to award Ski-Doo our 2009 Snowmobile of the Year honor.
When the 600 H.O. E-TEC was released late last season, it introduced the best combination for a modern snowmobile: light weight; cleaner emissions; outstanding fuel and oil economy; and excellent power delivery.
Emissions from the 600 H.O. E-TEC engine are some of the cleanest of any snowmobile. The E-TEC engine uses less fuel at a time when gas consumption is more than a concern, but a paradigm shift toward conservation. Its emissions are among the lowest from any snowmobile, cleaner than many four-stroke snowmobile engines while remaining lighter. It’s a high-tech, technological marvel with electronics that are the most sophisticated yet of any snowmobile.
Engine response is immediate due to the precise inputs from the EFI system that makes hundreds of calculations each second of run time. It delivers only the amount of fuel and oil required, achieving the perfect mix for ideal run quality. Carrying spare spark plugs is no longer a concern.
The TNT package is the lightest of the MX Z line, weighing a claimed 415 pounds, which is more than 50 pounds lighter than competitive machines in the same class. The MX Z TNT 600 H.O. E-TEC is built on the REV-XP chassis, the same foundation that earned our Snowmobile of the Year award a year ago.
The REV-XP, with its light weight and commanding ergonomics, puts riders in better control. Last year we wrote that Ski-Doo was representing the new era of performance snowmobiles with its lightweight chassis, and now the company landed a one-two punch with its advanced engine technology.
Our award goes to the machine that best follows our long-standing criteria: The Snowmobile of the Year is based on innovative, trendsetting representations of the future and a unique and positive impact on the sport. For 2009, the machine that best exemplifies those qualities is the Ski-Doo MX Z TNT 600 H.O. E-TEC.
