Fantasy Snowmobile Racing Based On Snocross & Ovals Events This Weekend

600x318Snowmobile racing season kicks into high gear this weekend, and with it comes the start of the fantasy Snowmobile Racing Challenge – Ovals game and the continuation of the Snowmobile Racing Challenge – Snocross game. Play one or both — it’s up to you.

Here’s a quick preview of the two big events. And, in an exciting development, both snocross and oval racing webcasts are available live this year on your phone or computer so you can watch the action develop for yourself.

Oval Racing In Ironwood

The oval racing season started last weekend with a two-day event at the Buffalo River Race Park near Fargo and continues this weekend with the famous and historic Ironwood Olympus in the U.P. border town of Ironwood, Michigan. The event’s history dates back to 1968 and, while it hasn’t had a continuous history, its level of prominence has regrown in recent years. In fact, the Olympus has earned Event of the Year awards from both the host USSA Pro Star circuit and the multi-venue TLR Cup series in recent years.

A total of 16 champ sleds showed up for that season opening race weekend, and the results were notably split. Friday 2010 World Champ Nick Van Strydonk ran away with the Pro Champ 440 final with Matt Goede second, then Gunnar Stern, Jordan Wahl, Beau Van Strydonk, Colt Dellandrea, Travis MacDonald, Dustin Wahl, Matt Schulz and Cody Knutson following. Six notable racers – Cardell Potter, Matt Ritchie, Joey Fjerstad, Nick LaGoy, Shane Peterson and Blaine Stephenson – didn’t make or start the final for a variety of reasons.

For Saturday’s TLR Cup points event, 2015 World Champ Cardell Potter was the man to beat, with Goede again second, followed by Schulz and Nick Van Strydonk, then Dellandrea, Stephenson, Sterne, Dustin Wahl, MacDonald, Jordan Wahl, Knutson and Ritchie. Those not in the final were Beau Van Strydonk, Fjerstad, LaGoy and Peterson.

(January 3, 2017) – The TLR Cup Tour kicked off the race season last weekend with Round 1 at the Buffalo River Race Park in Glyndon, MN. A new venue on the tour, the 1/4 mile banked track was well received by drivers, as the indoor heated seating accommodated a slew of fans.

The event, sanctioned by the Oval Racers Alliance, got underway on Friday and featured a full day of racing which ended with the 20-lap Pro Champ final. Nick Van Strydonk walked away with the win and would go on to finish fourth in the TLR Cup Tour points race on Saturday. After failing to qualify for the Friday night feature due to engine problems, Cardell Potter came back with a vengeance on Saturday to claim a win and two second place finishes in qualifying, setting him up for a great starting position in the feature.

Potter made quick work of taking the lead and would remain out front when the checkered waved after 15 laps. Matt Goede, a relative newcomer to the class, turned heads as he posted a second-place finish in both nights’ features on board a sled he rode for the first time the day before the race. Matt Schulz rounded out the top three, coming back from handling issues leading to a ninth-place finish the day before.

The weekend also brought the first round of Factory Stock 600 racing, the newest class to join the TLR Cup Tour designed to encourage new driver participation on stock sleds with limited modifications allowed. Ross Erdman, driver of the #311 Arctic Cat, was the guy to beat all weekend and won the features both nights. During the points race on Saturday, Chad Lian claimed the number two spot and Dalton Fredrickson earned third – both on Cats.

Snocross At Canterbury

The snowmobile snocross world turns to Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minnesota, site of many historic snowmobile races in the past 20 years.

Two race events have been held so far this year, though only three of the found rounds of racing – the second round of racing at the season-opening event in Duluth, Minnesota, was cancelled due to heavy fog that made racing impossible.

Therefore, this weekend’s stop at Canterbury Park will include three full days of racing for the top classes – the planning Friday and Saturday programs, and then a Sunday program will be a make-up for the lost round in Duluth.

For the snocross Snowmobile Racing Challenge game, picks can still be made through 10 a.m. central time tomorrow for Saturday night’s races; picks for the make-up Duluth round were frozen before that event was cancelled/postponed.

After being shut out at Duluth, Tucker Hibbert came back with two dominating performances in Colorado before Christmas and re-established himself as the man to beat. The other most notable and consistent top performance has been Tim Tremblay, who has locked into second place consistently so far this year.
