James Bay Tour – Trip Of A Lifetime

Think about extending your Northeastern Ontario tour as described by Craig Nicholson to include a trek that appears on many a bucket list: James Bay. Extreme Tours out of Cochrane has been leading trips out on to James Bay for about nine years now. It’s a round trip of some 836 kilometres.

Bill Froud of Extreme explained how the trip works. The guests meet in Cochrane, where Bill sets them up on the first leg of the trip to Abitibi Canyon via Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs groomed trails; about a two hour run. When you arrive at the Canyon, you’ll be met by your experienced tour leader. Your guides are William Tozer, a legend in northern Ontario as a trapper, guide and outfitter and his son Ben. Both men are devoted to the land and ensuring a memorable tour while preserving the natural beauty and balance of nature. Running primarily power lines for about 138 kilometres, you’ll arrive at William’s newly constructed cabin that comfortably sleeps up to twenty-two visitors. After a good hot dinner, some R&R and a good night’s sleep, you’ll head out the next morning for James Bay with the guide choosing a route based on current conditions. Runs up the frozen Abitibi and Moose Rivers are the most common.

Once out of the James Bay ice, there are plenty of opportunities for photo ops and a chance to appreciate the sheer beauty and vastness of the northern experience. Bill explained how the guide will often scratch the ice and pass it around for the riders to sample-a reminder that you’re now on top of salt water and directly connected to the northern seas. Then it’s back to the cabin for another cozy night and camaraderie.

Gone are the days of breaking trail with every journey to the Bay. This is a tour that’s comfortable for riders at just about every level of experience. Bill says that they’ve escorted a number of couples and families who want to make the journey. Riders are matched with others of similar skill level to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable tour. Groups of about ten are preferred.
