Snowmobiling In Wisconsin

Snowmobiling in the Badger State got off to a roaring start in the 1960s and is still going strong, which is proven by the numbers as well as by the quality and mileage of the statewide trail network. Wisconsin has had one statewide organization from its founding in 1969 — the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs (AWSC).

When a growing number of railroad lines were abandoned in the 1970s and ’80s, snowmobile clubs and the AWSC advocated  for their conversion to recreational trails. The Elroy-Sparta Trail was the nation’s first rail-trail, and today there are several dozen in Wisconsin — many attributable to the efforts of snowmobile clubs.

Throughout its history, the AWSC has been proactive in promoting beneficial rules and enlightened regulations, including gas tax refunds for trails, sound emission standards and snowmobile width limits. Currently, the organization is advocating a new fee structure that will provide incentives for club membership.
