Snowmobiling In Minnesota

Snowmobiling throughout Minnesota is always a pleasure and there’s no shortage of great places to explore. Distance riders can also rack up big miles on the excellent trail system that covers the state from one end to the other.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MnDNR) regularly updates and publishes four trail maps covering each quadrant of the state, providing an excellent reference source. The annual Minnesota Destinations brochure describes riding in all regions statewide and is a useful reference for trip planning.

The Minnesota United Snowmobilers Association (MnUSA) was established in 1978. “Our group works very hard to develop and maintain a great relationship with our legislators, the Governor’s office and the Department of Natural Resources,” says MnUSA President Keith Twombley.

Voyageurs National Park: This is one of the Upper Midwest’s most impressive places to ride a snowmobile — not just the great park itself, but the  surrounding area. Immense frozen lakes dotted with scenic islands offer fast, fun riding. In addition to the Voyageur and Arrowhead Trails, experiencing the single-track Chain of Lakes Trail is a must.

The Iron Range: Riding around the Mesabi Range is a treat, with plenty of snow and a great network of trails that connect with other outstanding destinations like Lake Vermilion with access to the C.J. Ramstad North Shore Trail along Lake Superior. And where else can you view gigantic iron ore pits right from the trail?

Bluff Country:  Minnesota is renowned for its north woods, but the riding is also superb in the state’s southeastern corner, in the forested hills and farmland just west of the Mississippi River. It’s a roller coaster ride, with scenic vistas to enjoy from every hilltop.
