Snowmobiling Needs You: Joining A Snowmobile Club Is Easy, Important & Fun

snowmobile clubSnowmobiling is an extra-special activity – and because you’re on this website, that means you’re most likely already one of the converted. Getting out and experiencing the dramatic winter landscape and enjoying the freedom to travel hundreds of miles on groomed trails, or exploring the vast backcountry where legal, is unmatched by any other sport or recreational activity.

Snowmobiling is also unusual in how incredibly dependent it is on its participants to develop, maintain and protect its infrastructure. Golfers don’t personally build and maintain golf courses; bicyclers don’t personally pave trails. But snowmobilers – grouped together as club members – actually do create, nurture and defend their trails and riding areas.

At one level or another, as a snowmobiler you play a vital role in protecting the very activity you enjoy – and that starts with joining a snowmobile club. As an added bonus, you’ll gain a wider circle of friends and riding partners as part of the deal. Being a member of a snowmobile club can be fun, entertaining and eminently rewarding. It’s also important – whether you’re actually the person running the groomer, pounding trail markers into the ground or planning the club trip, or as more of a silent member who is being counted as an advocate when the sport needs your support and the political clout that comes with bigger numbers.

Your Participation Is Important

Although obvious to many, it probably can’t be stated often enough: Snowmobile club members are the ones who are responsible for the vast majority of the snowmobile trails across North America.

In many areas, club members are the people who work with landowners to gain access to the path used for the trail and get insurance coverage for that route. Club members prepare the surface in the off-season, put trail signs in the ground, trim back brush and build and maintain bridges over creeks and through swampy areas. When the snow finally falls, it’s most often club members or people they assign who operate the groomers to meticulously prepare the trail. The clubs also continue other trail maintenance in-season and deal with any problems that arise. When the snow melts, those same club members take down the trail markers, thank the landowners and seek ways to improve the experience.IMG_1918

In other areas where the land is largely state- and/or federally owned, snowmobile clubs still play a vital role. They support the local land agency officials, build shelters, support grooming efforts and much more. It’s a lot of labor, but it truly is a labor of love. And, as the old saying goes, many hands make light work, so the most successful snowmobile clubs have many active members who all do their part.

When legal challenges arise that could result in closure of certain trails or entire trail networks, it’s the work, legal efforts and political clout of the snowmobile clubs and associations that push back against those who want to limit our sport. Even if the land battle or legal fight isn’t in your state, membership in a club most often makes you a member of your statewide snowmobile organization, and that state body most likely belongs to the American Council of Snowmobile Associations in the U.S. or the Canadian Council of Snowmobile Organizations in Canada.

Add all snowmobile club members together, and it equals people power that truly influences public policy – and your right to ride.

If altruistic reasons to join a snowmobile club aren’t good enough, there’s another secret: You quite likely will enjoy being a member.

Becoming an active snowmobile club member means surrounding yourself with like-minded people who share your passion for snowmobiling. Some snowmobile clubs have club rides, host cookouts or barbecues, hold entertaining and informative monthly meetings and participate in other community events.

Better yet, once you’re a member you immediate expand your circle of riders. Do you have a Wednesday off work but nobody to ride with? Put the word out among club members and you can quickly find folks to meet you at the trailhead.

Find A Club Today

Below is a list of 128 snowmobile clubs and eight state associations that are specifically reaching out to you, inviting you to become a member. The cost to join varies but it is typically rather inexpensive, and in some states club membership even includes discounts on everything from the annual trail pass to lodging, food and insurance. Reach out to one of these clubs today to find out more!

And, if none of these clubs are near where you live or ride, find a snowmobile club at snowgoer.com/states-with-snowmobile-clubs, snowmobilers.org or ccso-ccom.ca.

Clubs are important, groomed trails not so much. Just mark the trails and do maintenance when needed. Smooth groomed trails are boring and leave no challenge.
