Snowmobile Club Spotlight: Blue Ridge Riders

The Blue Ridge Riders’ grooming efforts in action.

Known for their many meat raffles, the Blue Ridge Riders of Rockwood, Maine, know how to fuel the community of snowmobiling enthusiasts it has gathered in its over four decades as a snowmobile club.

What’s the best in-season club event or activity that makes membership fun?
Starting in November we mail every club member five calendar raffles that they can either buy themselves or sell – they’re $10 each. They then mail back the stub with the money and the persons name on it by the end of January. Every day in February we draw a winner and you we cash prizes for that day, and we give away $5,000 total for the month.

We also sell the at Indian Hill trading post and some local businesses. The last Saturday in March we also have a club ride around the edge of Moosehead Lake, and after the ride we have a chicken BBQ at Moosehead Sled Repair and Rental – It’s fun had by all.

What’s the best off-season club event?
The Saturday before Labor Day every year for eight years now we have a pig roast and raffle items, including club merchandise and memberships. People come from all over, the food is great, the raffles are awesome and it’s a lot of fun. Each year it gets bigger and better – this year we served dinner to 310 people. But it takes a lot of volunteers, hard work and organization.

What’s the best way to find new members?
Word of mouth! If you ride a trail, you should join a club.

One interesting thing the club does for the good of the sport is…
Lots of trail work – keeping the trails wide, safe and signed real well. We also have an adopt-a-trail program.
